/dr/ is essentially the dream board for 420chan, however it usually consists of lucid dream discussion.

[edit] Lucid dreaming

The naturally occurring phenomenon known as lucid dreaming which consumes /dr/ is not a complex idea at all. Simply put lucid dreaming is being aware whilst still sleeping. This opens up an entire "world" for you to manipulate. You can deal with certain problems, control reality, face fears, and have sex with anyone. Ergo, you are the god of your own reality.

In dreams a person can be a degree of lucid. They can be not lucid at all, somewhat aware, or fully lucid. Of course there's grey areas of "i knew i was dreaming but went with it" ect. but generally when talking about lucid dreams, people mean fully lucid.

Generally speaking, most issues lie in control. Once you realize you are dreaming try to focus on a sense, such as the texture of the ground in the dream. The world should seem clearer and this stabilizes you in the dream. Rubbing hands, and shouting "ENHANCE LUCIDITY" work fine too. A common suggestion is spinning, which is slightly misleading. Spinning does focus on gravity but it blurs most of the senses, and is one of the riskiest ways to stabilize your world. As a rule of thumb, spinning works better for trying to change your location, versus helping stabilize and should only be used if needed.

[edit] Reality Checks

Reality checks are certain actions which are performed in order to test waking life.

  • Looking at clocks, or text: You just look at a clock or some text and look away. When you look back chances are it changed to something else.
  • Testing lights, switches, ect.: Switches to lights usually do not work in dreams.
  • Glancing at a mirror: Some have suggested looking into mirrors, which may result in a distorted image, or something completely strange.
  • Looking at hands: The dreamer just looks at his or her hands to see how they look. Usually the shock can make someone lucid.
  • Pinching nose: The dreamer would pinch his or her nose, and due to the dreamer not actually holding his/her nose in waking life the result is being able to breathe through usually.

These are to be done during waking life, and made a habit which will hopefully become so normal, that they do it in a non-lucid dream. The result is hopefully lucidity, though it is not uncommon for some to not work in dreams (lights working, looking normal in mirrors) due to already accepted ideas (reflection reflects me, switches turn on lights).

To start, Melatonin is a naturally occurring compound found in humans. You can buy it (depending on your individual country's laws) over-the-counter usually. In humans it has been found to increase vividness in dreams. It will not magically make you lucid, or increase your chances. The drug can also be used to increase REM time which could mean more or longer dreams. You can also use it for resetting your sleep cycle, since it's a main member of the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle. Though there has not been any tests on long term use, it has been shown to be safe for short term use (3 months or less). All in all, there are plenty of supplements and herbs for effecting dreams but no actual edible for producing lucid dreams or increasing chances.

[edit] Dream Recall

Dream recall is, unsurprisingly the ability to recall dreams. A person will generally experience three to six dreams per night. Of course we don't remember them all, because that would take up a ridiculous amount of memory and space in our mind. You might hear someone say "I didn't dream last night", that isn't actually true. They didn't remember but did actually dream. So, to remember your dreams you will need to work on your dream recall.

[edit] Dream Journal

Dream journals are just used to increase dream recall and to be able to see patterns. Everyday the dreamer would wake up and write whatever they remember about the dream in the journal. Over time your dream recall will increase and you can start to see dream signs. Dream signs are certain patters found in dreams which could be anything: from the "city" type of area your dreams always take in, to maybe you're always wearing certain clothes in dreams. These can be found through reviewing the dreams in your dream journal and noticing collective patterns. If you have problems recalling your dreams to write in the journal, then try reviewing before you move. Movement after waking can dramatically decrease the ability to recall dreams. Also try starting from the last thing you remember before waking up and working backwards.
